Mulligan
Earns "A" Rating from Illinois Citizens for Handgun
Control
September 19,
2002
Representative
Rosemary Mulligan (R-Des Plaines) announced today, that
she had received an “A” rating from one of Illinois’
most well respected citizen’s groups promoting handgun
safety. On September 16, 2002, the Illinois Citizens for
Handgun Control (ICHC) announced their yearly ratings of
Illinois General Assembly members based on the member’s
support or opposition to a number of crime fighting initiatives.
“I am
very pleased to be rated so highly by the ICHC this year,”
said Mulligan. “We had a number of crime fighting
bills that I supported this year and I feel the streets
are safer and families are safer when criminals can’t
get guns,” Mulligan added.
The Illinois
Citizens for Handgun Control asked current office holders
and candidates about such measures as universal criminal
background checks for all gun sales, restrictions on the
sale of military style assault weapons, state pre-emption
of local firearms laws and concealed carrying of weapons.
“9 children
die a day from gun violence in this nation,” said
Thomas Mannard, Executive Director of the ICHC. “Over
230 Illinois children are killed each year. Gun violence
is truly a public health epidemic that robs our society
of life, liberty and productivity. Our elected officials
have a responsibility to enact laws that reduce death and
injury due to gun violence and save lives.”
Throughout her
ten years in the General Assembly, Mulligan has supported
or sponsored a number of landmark bills including the use
of triggers locks, the Safe Neighborhoods Act and Truth
in Sentencing law. In 2001, Representative Mulligan supported
legislation for the creation of a statewide DNA database
of all incarcerated felons and future convicted felons.
The database could be used by law enforcement in the investigation
of unsolved crimes and for positive identification in future
investigations.
“Having
lost my father to handgun violence and after watching the
killers go free after only 11 years, this issue is very
personal. I support measures that help keep guns out of
the hands of criminals and help keep criminals off the streets
for as long as possible,” said Mulligan.
